Failed Variable Tracking System in 2009 Toyota Sienna?

My VTI (I believe that is what it is...whatever it is the computer system that runs the engine) is fried. I was told it will take 1 - 2 weeks to fix. My car is a 2009 and has 20000 miles on it. I am afraid of another problem happening and this time stranding me on the side of the rode with 3 kids...should I worry about this? Should I trade the car in and get something new? Or after the system is fixed I should be fine...
