Fundraising / charity for a family in need?

My best friends husband has just been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). It has come as a huge shock to everyone as he is a healthy 34 year old man with a wife, a 3 year old son and another baby on the way. As his life expectancy is around 3-5 years I want to set up a community fundraiser or something to raise money for them so that they can afford to do the things that they otherwise wouldn't be able to with the time they have left together Can someone please let me know what I need to do to get the ball rolling ??
