From Dark Brown to Blonde with lowlights?

I've really wanted to dye my hair blonde for years now, but when I've tried in the past it's come out all wrong (of course I did it myself), My question is has anyone ever been able to go from brown hair to a natural looking blonde quickly, like not doing is subtly? And what were your experiences?
