Moving to NY next year...help?

I'm 18 years old and next year I will be moving from the suburbs of Buffalo, NY to NYC all by myself to go to NYU...I've only been to New York a few times in my entire life and I love it but I'm a little scared...any New Yorkers with some helpful tips or anything I need to know? Thanks so much!
