Do people really think "government and bureacracy" could be better then capitalism?

One of the biggest difference between the "left and right" in America is the left wants government in charge, control and even to do everything for them. Examples are social security, education, and the idea of socializing medicine. Do people really think the government can do these things better then companies that would profit from the endeavor? What is better bureacracy or profit?
